1960年代に入ると、シカゴを中心にAACM（Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians）が独自の道を歩み始めました。ムハル・リチャード・エイブラムス、アンソニー・ブラクストン、ロスコー・ミッチェル、ハミッド・ドレイク、アート・アンサンブル・オブ・シカゴといったAACMのミュージシャンたちは、折衷的なアプローチで、前衛的なジャズを追求しました。
